The majority of the study sample was made up of men, and most had injuries to their extremities, like their hands or feet.Research has shown that washing a wound with salt water can help speed up the healing processA new study contradicts the common wisdom of washing a wound with soap and water to prevent infection. The most common cause was a car accident. According to research published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a low-pressure solution of salt water is a better idea.

The study looked at more than 2,400 patients who underwent an operation to fix an open fracture at 41 hospitals around the world during a four-year period. These results contradict previously accepted guidelines that recommend high-pressure irrigation to remove contaminants from open wounds, and previous studies that found soap to be better at removing bacteria than saline. Almost 15 per cent of the soap group needed surgery again, compared to less than 12 per cent of the saline group.

Patients who received soap and water were more likely to need surgery again in the following year to treat an operation-related infection, or some other kind of problem with the healing process. So it’s possible that the saline solution method might not be as effective for other wounds, but with 2,400 patients treated mold Spring randomly around the world, the low-pressure saline option would appear to be a safe enough method of cleaning — and a much cheaper one, especially for hospitals in developing countries. The researchers didn’t find any differences between patients who received high-pressure cleaning solutions or low-pressure ones. Some of them had their wounds washed out with castile soap and water, while others received a saline solution, both at various pressures

A few patients interviewed by this correspondent said they were satisfied with the leech therapy. Though J&K experiences subzero temperatures during winter that lead to accumulation of harmful toxins in the body, but many people on Navroz visit the hospitals to get their bodies detoxified by leech therapy. We are getting patients even from other parts of the country,” said Dr Muhammad Ismael, the in-charge of a Unani hospital. The Kashmiris believe this would heal them of pain, cure nervous system abnormalities, dental problems, skin diseases, infections, arthritis, chronic headaches and sinusitis. On Fridays and other special occasions like Milad-un-Nabi (Prophet Muhammad’s birth anniversary) and Meraj al-Aalam (the anniversary of his ascension to the Heaven), patients make a beeline to Srinagar’s lakeside Hazratbal shrine where leeches are applied to their bodies. However, dermatologist Dr Imran Majid warned that use of leech therapy could lead to serious side effects on a patient. If the same leech is used on more than one patient, it can lead to serious diseases due to blood mixing,” he said. The leeches are then allowed to extract blood, for 20 to 45 minutes at a time, from the person undergoing treatment. The leeches are known to treat various ailments in ancient Egypt!
